Fort Leavenworth is the oldest active United States Army post west of Washington D.C. It is known as the “Intellectual Center of the Army”. Fort Leavenworth is home to the Military Corrections Complex which includes the United States Disciplinary Barracks, the Department of Defense’s only maximum security prison, and the Midwest Regional Correctional Facility. Fort Leavenworth is located in Leavenworth County, Kansas. Fort Leavenworth’s Housing Division is located at 549 Kearney Avenue. The U.S. Army and Michaels Military Housing LLC formed a partnership with Frontier Heritage Communities LLC to develop family housing at Fort Leavenworth. For those looking for off-post housing or homes for sale or rent, contact the housing division at 913-684-3052. They maintain a list of available properties in surrounding communities as well as helping with individual BAH rates. Temporary lodging at Fort Leavenworth is provided by Hope Barracks. The barracks are located about 1 mile from the main gate and offers complimentary continental breakfasts as well as fax services and internet access. Fort Leavenworth has its own school district, the Unified School District. Children residing on post are eligible to attend the district schools. Parents are asked to contact the Fort Leavenworth School Liaison Officer Office located at 600 Thomas Ave. or by calling 913 684-1663. Students who live off post will have access to several public and parochial schools that offer education for grades kindergarten to high school. Senior high school students attend Leavenworth High School. The Child Development Center offers full-day care for infants and toddlers as well as a Preschool Program. Other programs offered included before- and after-school care, school holiday care and in-home daycare.
